Discover the Maldives
The Maldives are situated southwest of Sri Lanka with the atolls running some 820 kilometres north to south across the equator. There are nearly 1,200 coral islands, forming an archipelago of 26 major atolls which stretch 120 kilometres east to west. 200 are inhabited and around 100 are resort islands.
The capital Malè is a densely populated island and next to Malè is Hulhule, the airport island. Transfer from the airport to Malè is by dhoni (ferry) with fares payable locally. Hulhule not only includes the main airport, but also the seaplane terminal and hotels. Transfers to resort islands are by seaplane or boat dependent on distance from Malè. There are also internal flights to Gan in the Addu Atoll in the far south of the Maldives.
