Dress is generally casual with cotton clothing being most suitable. In Malè and other inhabited islands it is recommended that women wear modest clothing keeping their shoulders and legs covered.
The population is about 320,000 with Dhivehi being the language spoken in all parts of the Maldives. English is widely spoken. In the resorts, a variety of languages are spoken including English, German, French, Italian and Japanese.
The Maldivian currency is the Rufiyaa and the US Dollar is the most commonly used foreign currency. Payments in the resorts and hotels can be made in cash, travellers' cheques or credit cards.
Malè time is GMT + 5 hours, but some resorts adopt island time which is GMT + 6 hours.
Normal business hours in Malè are from Sunday to Thursday 7.30 - 14.30 in the government sector and generally from 9.00 to 5.00 in the private sector, although most offices in the private sector open for a half day on Saturday. Weekend falls on Friday and Saturday.
The electrical system is 230-240 Volts -AC
